Cazenovia is a town on the west border of Madison County, New York, and includes the Village of Cazenovia located slightly northeast of the town's center. Cazenovia was established in 1794 by John Lincklaen, a Dutch naval officer who named the town after Theophilus Cazenove, his boss and an agent of the Holland Land Company. This company, consisting of 13 Dutch investors from Amsterdam, purchased the area from Robert Morris, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and financier of the American Revolution. The Village was incorporated in 1810.
Many of the Town/Village's historic buildings are part of the Albany Street Historic District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notable Cazenovia real estate include various landmarks, such as several farmhouses, the Lorenzo mansion, Rippleton Schoolhouse, Lehigh Valley Railroad Depot and many others.
The Village of Cazenovia is located southeast of Cazenovia Lake. Noted for its wide array of fish species, boating access for the lake is allowed at Lakeside Park. A wide range of lakefront homes offer residents easy access to the water. Another nearby park is Lakeland Park, which features a Summer Concert series with a different band performing every Thursday night. You'll also find fresh, local produce at the Farmers' Market every Saturday mid-May to late-October and a brigade of antique cars every Wednesday throughout the summer at the Casenovia Cruisin’ car show held at Memorial Park (formerly Canon Park).
East of Cazenovia Lake, you'll be awestruck by the 167-foot waterfall at Chittenango Falls State Park. This waterfall is situated on 193 acres of nature at its best and cascades over bedrock roughly 400 million years old. The bottom of the falls flows freely into Chittenango Creek and underneath a charming wooden bridge. Watch the meandering creek or choose one of the various other activities offered at the park, including hiking on nature trails, fishing, picnicking or watching the kids have a ball on the playground.
The children of Cazenovia, New York, will also benefit from quality education with the Cazenovia Central School District – Home of the Lakers. Included in the District is Burton Street Elementary (K-4th), Cazenovia Middle School (5th-8th) and Cazenovia High School (8th-12th). For older, artistic students, Cazenovia is also home to the Cazenovia College, a small liberal arts institution.
